Orig.cloth, gilt vignette on upper boards. 187pp. frontisp.(portr.), 10 plates, of which portrs. and 2 double-p. being facsims. after old maps, some text-ills of globes, notes to chapters at end. A biography of Petrus Plancius, a dutch protestant minister, born in the Southern Netherlands (now Belgium), but spent almost his entire life in Amsterdam. Plancius not only played an important theological rôle whithin the dutch reformed church; his great importance lies however in his work as a cartographer and stimulating force in connection with the founding of the Dutch East India Company V.O.C. Whithout his maps the dutch would possibly have reached Asia in a much later stage, than they actually did. The greater part of this study deals with this rôle. Good copy.
